Where The Circus & the Sea Meet
The Port Lincoln Tunarama Festival & Adelaide-based youth circus, Cirkidz have been successful in securing funding from Festivals Australia to create the CIRQUE DU CIE project.
Cirque du Cie will be an exciting collaboration of highly trained circus artists and members of the local community who will perform the life cycle of a tuna through acrobatic tumbling, movement & physical theatre.
Cirkidz Artistic Director, Dan Aubin, says “Everyone knows circus is a very physical medium. A perfect way to portray the fast & streamlined energy of bluefin tuna. Plus, the chance to create a work with new community for us is always exciting.”
Festival Manager, Paul Sherry, says it will be an important community expression in “a year that a local company has “closed” part of that life cycle. The piece will celebrate not only the fishing culture of this region, but also an historic happening in marine biological science.”
The circus skills workshops will be held over four days, with over 120 places available for local community members, both young & old. Interested and talented participants will then go on to devise the work.
The performances themselves will be over three nights at the Tunarama Festival itself, in front of anticipated large crowds.
The project will also involve the composition of a commissioned piece of music, performed by local musicians.
All decorations and costumes will also be crafted locally.
Interested community members are invited to become involved with a local piece of history in the making, either by enrolling in the workshops, or coming to the Festival to witness a unique artistic fusion of fishing science and circus skills.
Cirkidz works with Adelaide and South Australian young (and beyond) people to bring its core values of Fun, Respect, Empowerment, Innovation, Health & Wellbeing through the positive of participation in the circus arts. 2010 is its 25th Birthday Celebration year.
