Emily Rowe

My name is Emily Rowe. I am 23 years old. I am sponsored in this quest by my current employer, Adventure Bay Charters. Adventure Bay Charters is a tour operator in Port Lincoln. The company provides its clients with an opportunity to have marine encounters with the Bluefin Tuna and the Australian Sea Lion as well as understand the relevance of the history and fishing and marine industries, to this region.

I was born in Adelaide and grew up in the suburb of West Lakes. My family has a farm in the Gawler River district. I spent much of my childhood playing, and later working there. When not at the farm, fun times were found at the local beach or on holiday at our shack at Carrikalinga.

Lower and upper primary schooling was at West Lakes Shore Primary Schools, followed by my senior schooling at Immanuel College. My time spent at Immanuel will always be remembered and be close to my heart as it was a place and time in my life where I developed many new friendships and gained fantastic life skills. The school spirit and community involvement have since played an important part of my everyday life.

Following school I attended Adelaide University from which I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. My passion for, and connection with farming and animals influenced my selection of subjects. I majored in intensive animal husbandry, animal health and horticulture.

Whilst studying, I began a new part-time working career at Hungry Jacks when I was 13 years old. I progressed quickly through various internal and certificate courses in food handling and customer service to become a Team Leader, then be promoted to Manager. The skills learnt in this environment helped greatly in my first ‘real’ employment.

Upon leaving Uni I was employed as a Quality Manager and Seed Officer at Mondello Farms. Mondello Farms is a large potato farming and packing facility based at Virginia, supplying the majority of this state’s potatoes to Woolworths and Coles distribution centres in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. I worked closely with farm staff and enjoyed regular visits to Pinnaroo, Murrayville, and Blanchetown in my role in QA, logistics, seed and later in agronomy, plant pathology and growing systems.

A new life – In November 2008 I moved to Port Lincoln where my brother works on our family’s cray boat. Influenced of course by my interest in primary production and passion for the outdoors helped me fall in love with the lifestyle, beautiful beaches and the town of Port Lincoln. I particularly love Coffin Bay in the summer!

RSPCA as my choice of charity in this quest was no doubt influenced by my pervious life experiences. I intend to become an active player in, and contribute to my adoptive community, and as such raise funds for this fantastic charity. Our local RSPCA needs support if it is to maintain animal shelter facilities into the future.

I see Tunarama furthering my life skills and active involvement in the community. My involvement in Tunarama will be something I will remember forever.
