Johana Mislov

My name is Johana Mislov, I’m 18 years old, was born in Port Lincoln, and have lived here all my life.  My sponsors in the Tunarama Quest are KFC, where I am currently employed; and Marko Transport, a trucking company run by my family.  One of the reasons I decided to participate in the quest, is because in January, 2008 my family suffered a great loss when my ‘Dida’ (Grandfather) Marko Visic, was taken from us after losing a battle with melanoma cancer.  I am proud to be raising funds in the Quest, for research into cancer for The Cancer Council, and to raise awareness of this aggressive type of cancer.

My family has participated in numerous Tunarama street processions with their Kenworth and Mack trucks, and from a very young age I remember Tunarama always being a highlight in our lives and something to look forward to.  But growing up in this close community has taught me that Tunarama is so much more than just rides, stalls and fun for the whole family – it gives so many members of our community the chance to do their part in not only helping tourism for our town, but giving and teaching young people about organising events and the opportunity to make something of ourselves.

When I was younger I had a blast appearing on my grandparents trucks in the street processions; watching and helping my Mum at the Croatian Club food stalls; appearing in some of the Tunarama talent quests that have been held; when I was just nine, I won a Miss Junior Tunarama title; and I have many medallions from competing in the Mayor’s Olympics when I was little.  I hope those attending Tunarama this year, will have just as much fun, and I look forward to an exciting year of events, fundraising, and growing as an individual.

On a personal note, music is a huge part of my life, and I love to sing.  I have performed in several St Joseph’s School musicals, talent quests, and competed in the Telstra Road to Tamworth competition, Australian Idol auditions and in Northern Area Country Music Festivals.  I enjoy sports, having captained and played for St Mary’s netball teams for many years, and I am currently playing for Waybacks, as often as I can.  I love animals and have had several pets.  I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, going to the beach, computers and photography.  In the future I would like to go to Tamworth to sing, and do a bit of travelling around Australia, but I know, I will always call Port Lincoln – home!

I believe we are all capable of making a difference in the world.  I know I’m only young, but I have a powerful determination, and I want to start making a difference now, and believe the Quest may be a great first step.  I hope the Quest will help me to gain confidence and communication skills, meet new people, and have some fun as well.  I hope that you will support my efforts throughout the Quest.  As space is limited here, for more information on The Cancer Council please visit their website on www.cancersa.org.au   Cancer takes family and friends – please help me to make a difference!

Thank you,
